Open Office & Mozilla Thunderbird
An earlier thread gave me a kick up the backside. I've been using a legal version of Office 2003 since I bought it, but lately have been having trouble with newer Word documents. Used a trial version of 2010, and didn't like it.
The thread earlier got me moving, and I've now installed Open Office and Thunderbird. open Office looks good enough for my needs, but........wow..........Mozilla Thunderbird is a great piece of E-Mail software. It's the easiest piece of software to set up.... ever!. Beats Office hands down. Just enter your E-Mail address and password, and it automatically detects your account settings and sets the account up for you. Handy when you've got 9 Googlemail addresses!!!! Why Microsoft can't make it that easy is beyond me!! Anyway, in a roundabout way, thanks for the earlier post/thread! Swanny

Welcome to the world of Open Source software ! You will find some fantastic free software, as good as commercial equivalents. Some packages you might want to take a look at include Filezilla, Infrarecorder, Kompozer, VLC, Handbrake, Audacity, Gimp and Chrome web browser.
You might explore Dropbox if you use two or more computers, or a computer and a web-enabled mobile. It is supported by Amazon and means I have been able to dispense with ever having to use memory pens again.

A tip if needed. Openoffice writer can open .docx files if you have an earlier version of word. Can I mention seamonkey as well? |

Infrarecorder is a good substitute for Nero. It will try burning anything you put in the drive, even a beer mat

Worked 1st time for me Poppy. Downloaded the install file and then ran it. You might have some AV software blocking it.

Not sure what the problem is. You could right click on the file used to install the software, and select to run as administrator.
