Default honey moon period over

Hi to all.
Just to let you all know that yesterday I finally picked up my new ( to me ) rover 75 diesel. I've been waiting a good few weeks for the paper work to get sorted out which you've probably read about in the general section.
Anyway to cut a long story short out came the dusters and polish today. I always find while giving a new car a good clean you tend to find all the little niggly things you missed when you first view a car.
Sure enough while polishing the off side wing I notice the front spring has snapped about three inches from the end in the cup. The snapped end is nice and shiny so its only just happened. Hmmmm not a good start. Like a lot of ppl these days I don't have a money tree growing in the back yard and I appreciate the both springs need doing together asap. What sort of money are we talking about, to get my little welcoming present to rover 75 ownership back in fine fettle?. I do have a very good garage who's never been to thick with the pen.
Ps sorry to harp on a bit, but will it still be ok to use for a few days. I generally drive very sedately on undemanding roads to work which is around 30 mile round trip. There's still quite a large proportion of the original spring sitting in the bottom cup as it should be

Many thanks for reading
John

While you're having the springs fixed, it would be worth thinking about these.

I've just been having a look around and they seem to be around the 30 pounds mark. There's even some on Ebay selling for a tenner. Surely these have got to be made out of spaghetti for that price for new springs.

It does make you think why springs fail so often these days. Is it down to road calming measures like speed humps ect or is it just down to the appalling road surfaces we have to endure especially during the winter months. Also does the very cold weather of the last few winters have any affect on a springed piece of metal. If a car is little used like mine, can springs become brittle. ? This car I've just bought has only done around a 1000 miles a year for the last 5 years. Surely this can't help matters either

That is bad luck.

The springs will cost about £65 for both from Best of British for the original Delphis or Sachs from Carparts4less.

Labour is 2-3 hours for the two depending on how difficult it is to remove the bolt that holds the damper in the hub assembly.

I had mine done recently and took the opportunity to have the strut top bearings replaced whilst the assemblies were out. These cost about £30 from one of the members' shops but don't add to the labour.

So it should be around the £150 mark.
I can see this weeks going to be an expensive one. Road tax tomorrow council tax, water bill and the telly licence oh and not forgetting the new springs.
I don't know about a money tree in the back yard. I think I,ll have to go and find an orchard !!!

I bought a pair of rear springs from ebay for £38ish including delivery, no complaints yet.

Make sure you get the strut top bearings replaced too, it would be a royal pain if you have the springs done and find out a few miles later that they have failed too and the whole lot needs stripping again.

Many thanks to you all for your help and advice. I've got the car booked in on wednesday so if you see two unidentified objects in the sky don't worry. They'll just be my old springs flying off into the great wonder. Strange may it seem the 75 is still light years ahead in a comfortable refined ride compared to the 45 even with a broken spring.
