Anyone have an opinion on this? Would the failed waterpump have cooked the engine? I'm guessing it couldn't be driven any distance in its present state?

Depends on "how on the ball" the owner was..............a slow leak without overheating should be ok after replacing the water pump...............a slow leak could be driven with regular top ups.............
My opinion would be if the car starts easily and the idle is smooth then the head gasket would probably be ok......if you view it i would remove the rad cap make sure water is up to level and let it idle with the cap off untill it gets up to temperature on the guage whilst looking for large air bubbles which will spurt the water out of the expansion tank like an icelandic geyser....then replace the rad cap and let it run for a few more mins and see if the water hoses go rock hard (they may be a little firmer but should no go rock hard)

So if it starts easily is smooth on idle and no violent chucking water out of the expansion bottle hoses don't go rock hard and no signs of water/oil mix (creamey under the oil cap or gunky in the expansion bottle)then the head gaskets are probably ok

it may be fine and the owner has been frightened by the £500-700 cost for belts and pump replacement
