Steve42,

Please consider changing for your own safety. Rewirable fuses can take 4 hours to blow and a lot of damage can happen in that time.

You are not supposed to wrap the silver foil from a KitKat wrapper around the fuse though

If it was me and money was not the issue, I would pay to have the property re-wired completely to have peace of mind. I did mine a few years ago and I sleep better for doing it. The decoration afterwards is a hassle but it's a once only thing and, very much needed in this power demanding age.
RCD's (residual current detectors) are not there to prevent overload of cabling, the main cause of fires. The correctly rated circuit breaker for the cabling size should do that. RCDs are an electric shock safety item. They shut off the current very rapidly, hopefully before any harm can be done.

Almost right, it's residual current device

Just had a Wickes installation guy round, asked the question about DB,
He has said the £545. Is for the box installing it, and checking the whole house before a certificate of Conformity is issued so mind about cost is at rest.

£500 is about the going rate, although RCD protected boards are no longer the best solution IMHO. If the customer will pay for it, I recommend RCBO devices, (combined breaker and RCD), for a lot of the circuits to avoid "nuisance tripping". Make sure he fits a metal consumer unit, as plastic is no longer permitted under BS7671 Amd3.

Fair price I agree. I am a degree qualified electrical engineer. The non-plastic (metal not specified as such, just non-combustible) DB stipulation is dumb though imo. The fire department determined that the main cause of consumer unit fires is "loose connections". To me that means not tightening the screws correctly but even more, the actual design of the accessories. One screw to hold a cable of 1mm to 25mm ? Plastic breakers, RCDs, RCBOs etc ? This is truly the area of research and design that needs further work.
Sorry to go totally off non MGR

ZT/T with losing water problems yet again

Thread moved to a more appropriate forum. Re-direct left in old. This may be the better forum as threads get ‘lost’ very quickly in the General Forum.
