Default HGF 1.8 Poll

I know for many 1.8 owners the threat of HGF looms large, I myself had OCD over checking the coolant level and looking for mayo when I owned my 1.8, I made sure that thorough checks were made and the car was maintained at all times and yet on a journey home one evening it happens. Thankfully repairs were done and the car was sold and is still on the roads, so it isn't the end of the world.

I am just curious what percentage of the 1.8's sadly suffer this problem

Default Hgf

My ZT-T 1.8T came with a mound of paperwork, including a bill for around £700 for head gasket replacement and other work (head was pressure tested etc.)

my car was loosing coolant since purchase almost 1 year ago (1 week shy)
I was planning to do a preventative replacement - however with all the other wee jobs never got round to it before failure i'd ran the car for 10,000miles (70,000 ish on the clock now) before it failed. i lost coolant to the oil. i noticed the temp jump on a short run put heating on full to control the temp and parked her up

i had the repair work done including water pump, cambelt etc.. cheers to CossieDunc
I've done around 1200miles since the repair - and all seems well, i haven't needed to top up any coolant yet

Cool

Banana suffered HGF with the previous owner. Was replaced with just a regular gasket. Mileage 41,000.

I bought Banana and she suffered HGF again at 82,600. Warranty Direct refused to pay for the MLS gasket to be put on as it was deemed to be a modification. Either the regular one is fitted and they pay for it or if the updated one is fitted then I pay for it. I opted for the regular one to be fitted. Never renewed the warranty with them.

At 122,000 it failed again. Now with MJS, so they fitted the updated one plus everything else that needed to be done at the same time.
At 125,500 she started losing water and it looked like there was oil in the water, well that's what I thought.
Mike had the car back and replaced the head along with everything else.

Later on it was discovered that the radiator was leaking. Mike replaced that as well.

Banana is now on 174,000.

My first V8, "Blue Thunder", also suffered HGF at 48,000.

Might it be worth opening up this poll to cover 1.4 or 1.6 K series engines we have owned as well ? As far as the head gasket and its problems they are identical , and it would give a bigger return to the poll

I had the 1.4 K series in a Rover 200 Company Car and it was awesome - many 10's of thousands of miles and never missed a beat

Then had the 1.8 K series in a Freelander and again, many 10's of thousands of miles and never any issues. I did tho' always treat both with "care" from cold, and the 1.8 in the Freelander was the later ones with the remote thermostat in the top hose - not stuck on the engines bottom!

Never had one in a 75 or a ZT tho. It would have to be a very good example at a knock down price to make me consider one now, seeing as past history/abuse is more than likely.

372,000 miles on the same gasket on my 214 SEi, and 71,000 miles on my new 416 SLi without issue.

All on blue antifreeze

My vote is based not on a 1.8 K in a 75 but the 1.8VVC in my MGF. I have owned it from new in 1998 and whilst it had never suffered HGF I had the HG replaced with the latest Chinese MLS HG from the N series as a preventive measure 4 years ago. My only other experience of the K series was in the less prone to HGF 1.4 guise. I did over 70K in my 214SLi driving into London everyday and apart from a dirty crankcase sensor it was faultless and the best made car I have ever owned

78% HGF so far, but it does show not inevitable.

The head gasket on Blue has just gone for the second time in my ownership just 13,000 miles after it was last done.
