Default Oil useage.

How much oil should a V6 use ? I know, I know.....in an ideal world....none.

Mine uses oil......I would say .... a litre every 6 months.

I have NO smoke from the back.(passed emissions easily in March)
I have NO external oil leaks.
I have NO oil in the water.
It does NOT over heat ever.
It starts on the button and ticks over superbly.

It does feel somewhat underpowered but both Vis motors work. And as I have never driven another V6 estate..... I can't really compare.

Any suggestions ?????

Or is it a quirk of the V6 ???

A litre every 6 months is fine, a little is burned (you'll see some oil in the throttle body for example) and the rings will always let a *tiny* amount past.

Surely it depends on mileage and the mileage covered over 6 months?

All engines do use some oil. Some engines accumulate dirt and by products of the combustion enough that the level remains constant - which is why you need to change the oil.

I cannot think of any petrol or diesel I have had for many years, where it needed to be topped up between services though.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I assumed standard mileage - around 6,000 for 6 months is pretty average, and a litre isn't too much over that period.

I lose about a pint, (well half way down between the Full & Empty marks on the Dipstick) between oil changes, which is approx every year.

But I don't bother topping-up as apparently the V6 runs better at that level. At my next oil change I'm only filling to this mark. There is a thread somewhere explaining the reason for this.
