Thanks Mick - it's appreciated. Word of mouth seems to be a big seller for us these days...

I had not realised these were from X-Part - I almost thought they were forgeries the quality is so poor!

Unfortunately, we've looked into alternative cars already - we trawled through a 200-page catalogue of rubbers and covers and found nothing similar.
The Land Rover Freelander was our first hope, but sadly also very different.

I'll probably see the chap at XPart we deal with soon, I'll have a chat.

So, now 'genuine' parts are just as rubbish. Great.

Thanks to the dreadful design of the handbrake system, someone had completely over tightened the adjuster nut, causing it to spin at the bottom of the thread on the short cable.

All the adjustment takes place at the bottom end of the thread, so it's no wonder so many get wrecked. Why the cable couldn't be 10mm shorter I don't know.

So everything out of the car so remove the handbrake lever to get the nut off and replace the short cable.

'Genuine MG Rover' short cable doesn't have the square location under the thread to stop it rotating in the lever. Whoever manufactures this part have managed to make a pants design even worst. Congratulations.

re the handbrake cable , if the adjustment under the console has run out just put
a remove the adjuster nut and put a spacer (i used a larger nut and drilled the thread out) and replace the adjuster nut. Fixes the stretched cable issue.

Hi Peter.
None of the cable stretch, well I have not seen one yet, its the compensator that's stretches.

HI Ben.
it's best to go with a genuine second hand cable they are good and last, I have seen a few so called new OEM front cable and they are thinner cable also the stub end is not round but hexagon

Yep, exactly Steve. It was also coated all the way to the end, so wouldn't fit in the compensator without further modification. It frustrates me because a lot of jobs are becoming even more difficult and time consuming.

HI Ben.
yes the sheath as to be trimmed, I recently had to trim one on a car that had already been fitted with this cable, they could not get it into the compensator because of the black sheath being to long
