Thanks for all the replies, I unplugged the MAF and it revs freely to 4000 RPM now, completely different. I'll get a new Bosh sensor now.

My diesel revs quite happily up to the red line.
Yours should too so there is a fault to be found.--- |

On the basis of it's dead anyway and nothing to loose I gave the sensor a good soaking with Electrlube contact cleaner and blew it out gently (not with an air line) a couple of times, let it dry and refitted it. The problem seems to have gone away and the car now revs as it should. Thanks again to everyone for the help and ideas.

I agree, allow the turbo time to spool up and use the gears to shift up, by the time you get to 3000rpm you are flying, no need to rev the diesel to 3000+ just give it time, it is an great touring car, in the city so long is above 1000rpm you can drive in top very well.
