I don't use the rear towing eye for that very reason Roy.

That's what made me say they are not really suitable for vertical lifting...

I suppose there is not so much weight at the rear of the car but I'm not sure I would be comfortable using the rear.

Thanks to everyone for posting responses.

My trolley jack has just decided to give up so I will have to get that sorted before I even think about jacking the car!

Default jacking up car

I'm changing the rear pads this weekend and was wandering what are the best points to jack the rear up with a trolley jack and put the axle stands, by the way its a zt-t I'm doing the pads on.

Thanks in advance

I have a small hydraulic jack which I put under the jacking pad to lift the car. This usually gives enough height to get a axle stand under the car. I put mine on a secure place on the rear subframe. If you have a quick look underneath before jacking up, you will be able to see a few strong points that you can place the axle stand. The centre jacking points are great for lifting the car up, but you a need a LARGE hydraulic jack to get any height.

For some reason my Tourer is so low at the rear that I need a basic 2-tonne jack ....

...under the rear hitch..

....to raise the car to get another 2- tonne jack under the rear jacking points A similar car, within 2 months of manufacture does not need this. My car has always been lower at the rear than most other Tourers... But then having driven both, mine "feels" better on road holding

last weekend, I was cleaning the rear arches, and figured I would try jacking up using my basic 2 tonne trolley jack (same as pic) only just about reached the towing loop, only relieved the weight of the suspension using the tow bar, and wouldnt even touch the subframe at max extension!

I keep lots of bits of timber and a pile of cut down railway sleepers which can be stacked up.

Aside from the damage, I don't like to have steel on steel - it can slip. I have some soft wood in the cup of my garage jack, I wrap rags around the V of my axle stands.

My latest addition last year, was this....

It is a purpose made mains powered hydraulic car lift. Using its fork, it can lift a tyre/ wheel, using its adaptor plate it can lift at the sill, or under the rear jack point. All to a height of 1M. The adaptor plate has a nice soft, none slip permanent cushion on top.

It makes working under the car almost effortless, just push a button and up it goes. No need for anything else, you just put a pin in and it is then perfectly safe to work under it.
I'm putting my lift up for sale, should anyone be interested in it.

Failing health and age has meant I haven't really been able to use it as much as I expected when I bought it, so rather than have it stood idle it has to go.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.
