Grease in droplinks?
I’m in need of another set of drop links, the 2nd set of rubber boots on the current drop links are now so perished there’s not a lot left. That’s 2 sets of boots in around 9 months.
As the supposedly good droplinks last such a short time, this time I’ve gone with whatever the local branch of Wilco could get hold of. I’m sure I’ve read on here that people have filled the boots on new droplinks with grease, to make them last longer. My question is, what type of grease are people using, all I’ve got here at the moment is some coppaslip, so will need to pick up a tub of grease too. Thanks. |

I would go with Lithium grease if I was going to that extreme, the links are a poor design and most are made from poor materials.
Despite this, I have fitted loads of these (Link Below) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-Sta...item1a77f37634 A, Great value for money. B, The boots seem to be of better quality compared to more expensive examples. C, There is a warranty for them too which is far greater than what you would expect considering their price. D, Far easier and quicker to fit a set of new ones, than attempt re-booting your current ones. |

5 years warranty works out to £20 a year.
OP had two pairs in 9 months. May work out cheaper in the end. But I agree, a ton for drop links is jaw dropping.

£100 seems excessive. The ones that have failed we’re about £35 for the pair, within a few months the boots perished, he sent out a replacement set of boots to fit, which have now perished again.
Local branch of Wilco had them for £10 each so will give them a go, and I’ll try filling with grease, see if it helps at all. Original droplinks had done over 150,000 miles before they needed replacing, and even then only needed replacing because the rubber perished, the joint was still ok. |

I use Castrol CL grease. It sticks like the proverbial, So is just the job in that position. Put plenty in then work the joints by hand to give a good spread of grease all over the knuckle.

Thanks, I’ll see if they’ve got that in stock when I go to collect the droplinks, didn’t have them on the shelf but said they’d get them for today.
*edit* silly question, do you need a grease gun or syringe to put it in or can you just put it on with your finger? |

Purchase your self some of these, pack out with grease using a small syringe, you could get 9 sets of these for the price of those £100 ones above.
Use this grease below for packing out. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Granville....c100005.m1851 With most of these drop links now you may as well treat them as a service part, check and replace ta your yearly service if you get longer out of them then great, dear or cheap it is always pot luck, at the best I have had over the last couple of years were Unipart, correct fitting and packing out with grease will help them last longer good luck.
