Default noisy tappets

the engine on my rover 75 1.8 club is making a tapping sound coming from the rocker cover, could it be the tappets that need adjusting? should i worry about the tapping or just leave it? it seems to be running fine

The tappets are self-adjusting hydraulic type and should look after themselves. They may develop a tapping noise if their oilways are blocked or restricted. Some people find particular brands of engine oil cause similar noises (eg. Magnatec). I've no doubt there are oil additives that may free up the tappet oilways but I never use these so can't advise on 'em. If the oil change date isn't too far away it would perhaps be worth doing it now and consider a different brand or even running a proprietary pre-flush (again not something I would normally do).

I'm not gonna suggest one oil over another, there'll be plenty of suggestions to confuse the issue anyway. All the big names are good and perfectly suitable (other than the Magnatec mentioned - all that is anecdotal btw). Even supermarket brands should be fine if cost is a factor. Ensure they meet the specs set down. You need a 10W-40 complying with the ACEA A1 or ACEA A2 specs. I'd go for the A2 personally. Using a higher spec (eg. A3 won't harm anything, just more expensive. I'm not sure whether the A1/A2 specs need a synthetic component at all. Anyone know?

The usual lore says don't start using fully synthetic if the engine hasn't used it from new. There's sound reasoning behind this which I tend to agree with, but many swear by fully synthetic. You pays yer money and . . .
