As the crankshaft pulley is responsible for running the alternator it looks highly likely - are you getting engine vibration and an erratic idle as well ? If so that certainly points to the crank pulley.

unfortunately I haven't had the car long or used it much (I got it just as we went into first lock down and have been working from home until last week) so I have nothing to compare it to, it seemed smooth enough, or nothing to raise any concern. Though during the first light easing of the first lockdown I got Nick at Austins to give it the once over as I had no history, I'm sure he would have noticed! I've probably done 150/200miles since. The crankshaft pulley is probably OK then.--

I managed to get the alternator off and the spindle runs smooth

Don't forget that a noise may only occur when a component is under load, or at a certain speed, even though the bearings felt OK, and they may well have been, excess armature end float can be the source of noises.

Did you run the engine with the belt off and had the noise gone confirming the noise was the alternator ?

With the alternator off it's very easy to grease the ball race.

Sorry, but you are wrong, if you have ever removed an alternator you would realise that both (2) bearings are only accessible with the alternator dismantled and both bearings are sealed both sides and not open bearings.

If anyone wanted to introduce fresh grease, pointless because the bearings are so cheap, the bearings would have to be removed and the seals prized out to introduce more grease !

Don't be sorry. I'm not.----I have opened them and greased them and made them last a long time if there is no mechanical damage.

PS. been pulling various mechanical items apart for over 70 years now as well as being for a long time a mechanical design draughtsman for a lot of that time.
Designed part of the guidance system of the item pictured below.---

So watch out--------INCOMING---

Further to the above.---You boil the bearings in grease to fill them.---( Unless they are the plain sintered metal type of bearing that are oil lubricated.)---with a felt, oil impregnated pad. )
