Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) is free and does a good job, takes time but wipes everything...used it myself to good effect.

DBAN does an excellent job and leaves a clean drive for whatever OS your friend wishes to install and any bugs viruses malware will be ancient history, it takes a while dependent on size of drive, but well worth it if you have sensitive information stored on it
