Look at the back of your PC & you shoulds see some vertical or horizontal Blank exspansion plates diagtam here http://www.acrcomputers.co.uk/img/plugs/pcback.jpg, all you need to do is unscrew one take it out, then slot the USB card in its place which will line up with the empty socket on the motherboard, very easy to do.

Ray Try this!
First connect the USB device into the USB port. Click start, bottom left. Click Control Panel. Click Add Hardware, you might need to click classic view. The welcome to the add hardware wizard appears, click next Click in the box 'Yes I have already connected the hardware. Click Next. You will now get a list of hardware that's installed on you computer, look at the first one (top line). If it has the yellow triangle next to it, then this is your problem. You may have a corrupted driver, but don't worry your PC should be able to sort the problem out by itself and installing the corrupted driver via searching on-line. Just click on that line (highlight it blue) and click next and follow the prompts, but make sure you are connected to the internet. Your computer might want to search for the missing or corrupted driver. I hope this helps...... |

I've found on a few PC's having to many devices per USB controller can cause the controllers to shutdown. This is mainly due to the power requirements of the devices. They may well work when you plug them in one at a time but later the power requirements may change and can cause issues.
I've always used a powered USB hub on my desk. It means that the PC provides no power to the USB devices and a hub is cheap enough to replace if somethign untoward does happen.

my outcomes were more effective - thanks all. PCI card was about £7 and it fitted. And now my originals seem to be working more too!
My hardware list now appears to say I have about 15 usb ports though - not sure what thats all about... Got a ton of cobwebs out too, while I was in there. |

But....
the USB 2 PCI and driver wont come up as USB2.0 ! It always say "why dont you go and plug in somewhere else instead if you want faster USB" or something like that...
any thoughts? |

Hello Pondweed
The 1st thing to try is go into Device Manager & under the View heading click Hidden Devices. In the USB list you should see 2 USB open host controllers, (mine are listed as NEC PCI to USB open host controller) right click the 1st one & uninstall it, then do this for the next one & all the root hubs, then restart your PC. If you have a USB Mouse just un-install as many as you can until the mouse stops working & press the reset button. Restart your PC...Windows will autmatically install the device drivers. If this doesn't work it maybe worth going to the Dell Support Site to see if they have a chipset update for your Motherboard It is normal for you to see 2 Hubs for every Controller in the USB list with XP.
