If it's any use to you, I think I might have one of those exact PSUs lying around, pulled from a Gateway of the same era.

I think the only awkward bit with replacing one is the on/off switch may be difficult to get at, if it is, splice the wires of the new one onto the old ones.

And don't forget, the wires only touch briefly when starting, so don't twist em together... (don't ask) ----

it is indeed the psu that has failed. Took it to a local computer shop, & after testing, it was found to be the fault. So it's in overnight as he has to solder the old plugs to the new unit.Once again, you've come up trumps

Soldering old plugs to a new PSU? Does he know what he is doing?

That desktop should take a standard ATX psu, assuming its not a small form-factor base unit. Should be a straight swap, no messing about.

The only difference is that modern ATX psus have a 24 pin connector, your old one will be 20 pin. However the extra 4 pins on modern supplies are detachable and any engineer worth his salt will be used to that.

Yes Ian, I think you're right. I've been discussing this with mofo, and he thinks something is wrong . I'm phoning first thing in the morning to cancel & get it back.

Yeah - something very odd, I certainly wouldn't accept it. Can't even see how the tech reckons he needs to do it, or why he would want to, unless he has some ulterior motives.....didn't work sir? you need a new pc.....

New ones around the £12 mark, should be a straight sale and fit.

If you need a word tomorrow, just let me know

Why would you have to touch the on/off switch?

The power switch is on the case (nothing to do with the PSU). The PSU might have an on/off switch on the back - but this is part of the PSU, you don't need to remove it.

As above - absolutely no need to solder (!). A new PSU might be £12, but it's not something I'd recommend - but for an older PC you can get a good PSU for ~£30.

To add - desktop PC's are all plug and play, absolutely no reason why should you ever need to cut and solder etc. You can get adaptors for absolutely any situation on eBay for less than £2 (if you even need to - all standard connections).
