Wind them up. Tell them at the very beginning of the conversation, that you suffer from short term memory loss and could they bear with you......

.......then let them waffle on for a few minutes.......

.......then ask them something they told at the very beginning "who they were" and what his name was for example............and could they explain it again, please. (All very politely of course)...........

Repeat same questions to them a few minutes later apologising and explaining for your short term memory loss............and keep repeating................ until they hang up.......

.....but try not to laugh.

Do say..... Was it British Gas?

They are notorious for cold calling and gazzumping accounts
Then try leaving them!!! They are like leeches, will try to bleed you dry before they give up!!

I have used the following method in deterring the offending callers. Just has they start their sales patter simply interrupt them and say " Can I ask before you start if you have found love in our saviour Jesus Christ" it's amazing how quickly the phone goes dead.

PS no offence intended to any member of a religious persuasion

My brother had a good one when we lived at home , he would talk to the people on the phone for as long as he could (even asking for extra services etc) and then just as they asked for details etc he says........."thanks for the info , do you want to talk to my dad now ????"

the normal reply was.......click

Ps he once had a couple of JW's in our living room for 3 hours on night when he was 14.......in the end they made their excuses and left

Funny we were never bothered from then on

My surname is very commonly mis pronounced, SWMBO is quite prickly on the subject and if she thinks it is a sales call simply says, quite truthfuly, ' i am sorry there is knowone here by that name.'

I am a big fan of ' Could you just hold the line for a moment......' then just put the phone down on the side by the telly and let them enjoy somthing from one of the terrible digital channels available these days.
