How to fix this ? tourer tailgate strut mount
My left hand strut ball joint has broken away from the pillar and fallen inside so I only have one working strut, can't think of a solution, any ideas
Should look like this, this is the RHS But the LHS has done this |

how much room is there between the tail gate and body? could a plate be welded over the area and the strut fitting be refitted to the plate?
if no room then you may have to put the plate inside the hole. arc welding may be better as heat is localised and short duration. macafee2 |

A welded plate is your only solution.
Happened to mine. you cant really get behind it due to access and the size of the tubing I was quoted about £250 to do mine nicely. |

Mine went the same as Mangizmos.... but not as long a rip. The original plate had fallen off inside the bodywork never to be seen again.
I'm sorry I didn't take a picture Basically it was a 50mm x 20mm plate with a hole in the middle Behind the hole a nut was welded on. the nut fitted inside the tear on the bodywork and the plate was welded on colour coded and the ball nut thing screwed in. it was the prep work on the body that took some time as they did have to widen the rip to get the nut to fit in. Well this seems to have worked for now
Not sure how long it will last but it seems strong enough, I filed out a slot and managed to get a large washer behind and clamped it really tight with another washer on the outside and added another below for more rigidity (which I will cut off) seems OK at the moment, if it doesn't last I will have to get it welded

Looks a good temp fix. Maybe a nyloc nut to stop it from undoing.??

Well you can try my idea, 2 large sturdy washers, a 10mm (spanner size) bolt, 1 washer each side and clamp onto the good metal really tight, I then drilled the outer washer at the top and put an additional self tapping screw into the good metal of the pillar, maybe not required but extra fixing to prevent it moving
The strut fits over the threaded part of the bolt and stays there just fine, I then filled with car filler, it seems ok and I am hopeful that it will last, it looks reasonable and its out of sight in any case |
