Default Not-so-refined 75 Diesel

I have owned my 75 CDTI for about two months now and the roughness of the engine really starts to irritate me. It starts and pulls very nicely but especially when cold it shakes and clatters like my '57 Ferguson tractor. Also the whole car vibrates badly on idle, which settles down a bit at speed and when the engine gets warmer. It seems that the engine vibrates excessively and somehow that vibration is conducted to the chassis. I think the car is otherwise very nice so how could I get it as civilized again as it should be? The DMF and crank pulley are ok and there are about 139 000 km on the clock. Could it be that the engine supports have already given up even if they look just fine outside? Also the exhaust may cause some clatter when the engine vibrates but surely it can not be the cause for the vibration itself. What causes the engine run that rough?

Hi mate,
Sounds to me like the hydromount maybe failing inside the hydromount it has a type of fluid from memory and it goes hard, creates engine vibration you can often noticed it vibrating through the steering wheel. Often the lower Mount is also susceptible to Failure too,but it's difficult to tell by looking at it. Of course a T4 session will pick up cylinder correction, and it may well be an injector thats slightly out of balance, when the engine is exceeding 1600 rpm the balance is not as important as it is on takeover and therefore not quite as noticeable.

Primary suspect is always the bottom engine (teardrop mount). A simple job and not too expensive. Other cuplprits as mentioned are the hydromount (top engine mount) and gearbox mount. The other thing (and probable main cause of tickover vibration) is poor injector balance. Get a good dose of injector cleaner through and use branded fuel with fuel system cleaning additives. (my favourite is BP ultimate). Once it's had a good clear through get it checked out on T4 for the engine running parameters and see how it is.

Definitely the top Hydra mounting.I had all your symptoms(60,000), obtained a new mount via RMGDS,the difference in the car was unbelievable,no vibes in the car at all, in fact you can now place your hand on the mount which vibrates like crazy ,and at the same time on the bodywork and not the smallest of vibe's is being passed across the mount, even the steering wheel is vibe free.
Its not the easiest of jobs, and ideally you will need to borrow a special tool from the Forum, plus you will require a decent jack...there are loads of info on the Forum on How to, or ask me?
It is worth doing the lower one, that's dead simple, Im certain if you take it off and look closely to will see its cracked and shot(as will be the Hydra mount). Make certain supported by axle jacks or similar. Take a look at my profile, if I can do it anyone can.....
