Default Laptops for T4 & VT4

Hi.
Unless I am a total dimwit does T4 & possibly VT4 not require a 32 bit processor?
Windows XP is available in 64 bit but T4 surely being an old program wont run on the 64 environment as I have discovered.
I have tried to run T4 on a 64 bit PC and64 bit XP, it doesn't load the program discs properly so when you go to the first menu page T4 doesn't see the CD, unless I am doing something wrong?

Perhaps with all the talk of VT4 it might be better to get what spec of laptop is best before peeps go out and waste money on unsuitable laptops.

You should be able to run T4 on a laptop with a 64 bit processor, but you will need to install a 32-bit version of Windows XP (it comes in both flavours) on that machine (it will work just fine, but wont be able to address more than ~4gb of memory

That's odd when I try to install XP 32 bit on a 64 bit machine it only goes so far and comes up with an error and blue screen.
Does this on three 64 bit machines I've tried.

You can definitely install x86 XP on and x64 CPU.

x64 XP was well supported driver wise so it's hardly surprising that there are problems.

Yes 64 bit XP loads ok on 64 bit machines but T4 isn't happy and I can see the same issues with VT4. Has anyone had success using T4 under the 64 bit environment?

In my opinion that wouldn't work. 32-bit OS requires 32-bit drivers while 64-bit OS requires...well....64-bit drivers.
T4 (whether the true original bulky one with VCSI interface, or the small, USB-based T4-Lite) only has 32-bit drivers...hence only 32-bit OS can be used.
It doesn't change the fact though, that any 32-bit OS can be installed on 64-bit CPUs. Thank goodness for that as all CPUs over the last 10 years or so are 64-bit ones. If it were not possible, we wouldn't be able to use the T4 hardware on newer machines.

Just install the x86 (32 bit) version of Windows, it will work perfectly. If you have a blue screen it will be a driver, probably for the IDE ports, which you should be able to get round by downloading the "F6 inf" files for the chipset (Google is you friend here). Or you could use x64 Windows 7 and run a virtual PC inside of that.

That isn't necessarily true, it also depends on the particular bios used in the machine.

RDS was originally designed to be run on 16bit windows 3.1 for DOS

The original laptop used by Omitec for RDS 4.04 for the first T4 interfaces was a Dell C600 Lattitude P3 750Mhz running windows 98.

However later versions used were Dell D505 and Dell D610, both running XP pro SP1 with no service pack upgrades.

If you want a decent rough and tough laptop, preferably with a touch screen, as that is what the RDS MMI was designed for, either a Mk3 Panasonic CF-28, with a PIII 900Mhz or a Mk2 CF-29 with a Centrino 1200Mhz is what I would recommend.

Of course limitations would apply in the case of using the CF-28, but not the CF-29 so much.

However you should be wary of running RDS under XP in VMWare with later operating systems, as it is not particularly stable
