I see TFL are hiking the maximum fines up from next Monday on those red routes. https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/...s-23-WEEK.html

Yes you're not wrong, They want a £20 council tax rise also to stop the transit system from collapsing. https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/london-s...apse-1.1696349

Maybe we have been lucky in the past with our level of taxation in what ever form it comes in? I know friends who live on the continent tell me what they pay for stuff.

If we want amenities, good public transport and all the other things the modern age is bringing it has to be paid for in some form.

The next new tax will be paying per mile and electric cars will be paying road tax.

Our taxes are actually quite low considering the services.

Just been reading Mayor Khan wants to do away with the congestion charge & ULEZ's & replace them with a pay-per-mile scheme, He also wants to extend the zone from the north circular & south circular roads to all Greater London

"Such a system could abolish all existing road user charges – such as the Congestion Charge and ULEZ - and replace them with a simple and fair scheme where drivers pay per mile, with different rates depending on how polluting vehicles are, the level of congestion in the area and access to public transport. City Hall said the report, published by Element Energy, shows that it needs to take more action, particularly around reducing vehicle use "

That reads like a sensible idea, and one I've always believed should be applied nationwide in place of ved. But the application in specific areas could be problematic in its application. Nationwide, it would be simple, add 10p per litre to cover the ved- calculated via an average of 12000 miles per year and the pre2001 ved costs. Perhaps local fuel.stations having increased duty applied could work to a certain degree?

I read a piece that said very low mileage users doing less than 5K/year would be exempt.

Here's a thing! If London gets it's expansion to cover all of greater London what will happen to those petrol stations within that area if car traffic falls ?

Shell & BP have been converting petrol stations into EV charging hubs all across the country like the one in Fulham recently. https://insideevs.com/news/559069/sh...n-ev-charging/

BP have just announced that their EV chargers are on the cusp of profitability over filling up a petrol car at their pumps. I wouldn't have thought that would have happened so soon as BEV numbers although rising fast YOY are still low numbers.

They will not stop "hiking" any charge within their remit until London is a non-vehicle 'ghost town' with only Oyster Card/Travel Card toting tourists allowed!

Yes - bring back the good old days.

I spent three years at Kings College on the Strand and another year at Imperial in Kensington. Always traveled on the bust and underground from the Heathrow area in the 1980's. It used to be a real pleasure to walk around London in those days. Now, there are too many people and too many cars. A reduction is needed in both numbers.
