I can remember the man from the Coop insurance coming around to the house to arrange all the policy's and then my Dad would give him a Cheque.

We do have a milkman and the window cleaner now comes in an old Astra van but he does not take cash.

My Brother was brought home by the Police, he had been caught drinking cans of beer at 15.

Like most (all?) of our older members, I can recall at least 95% of what has already been said; so how about a specific memory?

Were you a youngster in Sydenham, London; early 50’s?

A disabled ex-serviceman (in uniform) who sold boxes of matches from a tray, supported by a strap around his neck (like the ice-cream ladies in the cinema)

This gentleman had one leg; so his redundant trouser leg was folded in half, with the turn up tucked into his belt; or similar (I just have the vision of him, not the specific detail)
He stood on a busy corner, with the aid of two wooden, under the armpit crutches.

The busy corner was the junction of Kirkdale and Dartmouth Rd., just up from the Woodman Pub (closed 2011)

If you walked down the Dartmouth Rd. (towards the ABC cinema in Forest Hill) then on the left hand side was the motorcycle shop of one Harold Daniells (sometimes spelt Daniels)
Harry was a former Norton Works Rider, with some very longstanding IoM records to his name.

Within the same area was another motorcycle shop, owned by Jack Surtees (John’s Father)

Memories,

Regards

Mike

As a youth of about 14 (mid 1950’s) I, er, had something of an interest in the geegee’s at Chester racecourse.

I was able to get in and actually place a bet. With the help of friends, naturally.

The stake was from my paper round, saved up for weeks. (It was a big round, criss-crossed bags.) A familiar sight on the gate was a character called Prince Honolulu. He would sell tickets with his selections for the day’s programme in a sing-song voice and was a giant of a man.

He was the first person I came close to who had a different coloured skin to mine. He dressed in what we now see as a welcome, if decorative, traditional African neck-to-ankle shift. Gold and purple fringes and a rope of charms around his neck. Exotic or what. To a young lad that was magic. His singing and chanting was amazing and has stayed with me.

'I gotta horse! I gotta horse'!

Apart from what's already been mentioned here are some things from my yoof(!).
Guys driving bare lorry/bus chassis around the country.
You could send parcels by bus.
On hot summer days buses drove around with the door(s) open.
Vesta dried curries . . . . still available but they're rank!

I can remember my Father coming home in a furious mood, he declared that is is it I am giving up driving. He had just paid £0.50p a gallon for 4 Star Petrol.

When I started driving it was just under £1 but within a year it was £1.25 a gallon. I remember that because £5 would get me to work for a week.

The cost did seem to rise quite quickly at times.

I ran an Austin Westminster in the early days. It had 14 gallon fuel tank that I used to fill each week for just over £2.00-----

Air shows where the planes did "fly-bys" right over the crowd. I remember a Vulcan scaring the doo dah out of us as the sky went black just before the VROOM as it then went upwards and disappeared into the blue yonder!

10.41 on this vid may have been the actual one:-
