I went on a speed awareness course to avoid points and learned a lot of useful information. Obviously I wasn’t pleased to have missed the camera in the first place but that in itself shows I wasn’t as observant as I thought I was!

As with any skill, it takes effort to achieve and maintain high standards. A kick where it hurts can do all of us some good.

On the other hand, when I drive during the early hours I often see single vehicle accidents. In fact, on Friday just befor midnight there was a Ford focus on its roof facing the wrong direction having gone up a bank on a bend on the A12. There were 3-4 police cars in attendance. It wasn't difficult to work out the likely cause of this particular accident - excessive speed.

Or they weren't focussed on the road,Maninder.

Maybe there was an issue with the car?

Perhaps the driver had a medical issue?

Or they hit something. There are a number of deer in that area.

They could have been arguing with a passenger.

The cause of the accident could have been anything, or a combination of multiple reasons. There is, I believe, a specialised unit within police forces to investigate such incidents.

but if they were gong slower, the incident if speed was a contributory factor may not have happened or may have been less severe

I think that we are all smart enough to know that the vast majority of accidents at that sort of time are speed, drink and/or drug related.
Another campaign run back in the 80's was brilliant and effective. There was a series of posters to improve road safety, particularly with respect to drink driving. To my mind, the best was one which showed an absolutely beautiful, sunny autumn woodland scene with the prominent text saying "What a beautiful day to die". The sub text, "Don't drink and drive"

On this particular occasion, possibly and possibly not. But the frequency of single vehicle accidents during late night/early hours suggests the common denominator of a speed of travel that is incompatible with the driving environment and driver skill.

Even if the cause of an accident is something other than speed, a lower speed will usually give more time to bring the car under control safely.

An unmarked police car perhaps? (Should have had the lights going though!)
