Default Coolant ‘Issue’ Perhaps a leak?

As some of you might know, my 75 has no heat, so as people said, I bought some coolant in Halfords and went to check the level, nothing was in there. I filled it up with the coolant, and after looking underneath the entire £10 bottle had leaked out onto my driveway.

I’ve got no knowledge on this whatsoever but could I need a new header tank?

Thanks

Diesel engine not KV6 (I cannot change the subject line!)

You first need to find out the source of the leak Leyton. Are you equipped to raise the front of the car, take off the undertray (if still present) and have a look?

Yes, when it’s a bit lighter i’ll have a look. The only thing that there is to note at the moment is the leak isn’t bit by bit or anything, I tip it in but it goes straight through onto the ground 🤷

Good! It should be easy to find the problem then.

I'm going to guess at the thermostat or the associated pipework.

Just seen the heading that its a diesel! Check the Y piece on the front of the engine block (It will require the inlet manifold removing)

^^^ This. Thermostat, water pump, O ring etc. About £70 for a repair kit from DMGRS and 3-4 hours labour to change, definitely a job best left to someone who knows what they are doing.

Back in the day, you opened the bonnet and there was the thermostat and water pump staring you in the face. Morris Minor, Austin A60 etc. I've done loads of those myself as a 17-year-old with a couple of spanners

But is it like that now? Oh no. It's like the Rover/ BMW engine designers met up and said "Let's put all that stuff in the most inaccessible place on the engine possible. Right at the bottom".

When I had my Frogeye in the 90s a brand new water pump was 30 quid and took 20 minutes to fit, on my drive with some basic hand tools.
At the same time my then Father-in-law had to get a new water pump fitted to his nearly new Renault Clio 1.4. Luckily for him it was covered by the warranty but the cost having it done at the dealer would have been three hundred quid.
Ten times as much as the Frogeye.

That Frogeye is still going, needless to say, the Clio is long gone.

Back in my day you opened the bonnet and there was enough room to climb in next to the engine. Plus you knew exactly what everything was, what it did and how to fix it.
