when i next move the car I will take another look but I did not feel the strap was loose. Will also try proper grease. Currently it is too close to my other car to open the door properly.

If it was loose it would probably not creak. It's likely partially seized (stiff) hence the suggestions for grease.

I have had another go at lubrication the start but to no avail. I will put up with it until the warmer weather and then it seems, remove the door card and strap. It sounds awful I really dislike the sound but I dislike working in the cold even more.

My rear o/s door was like this - being a terminally lazy soul, I fired silicon spray in deep by squirting it along the line of the top of the strap, and hoping it found its target... seems to have worked for some time now

Sorry.--Totally disagree. Perfect for spraying on to any electrical plug and socket.---I've always used WD 40 on all my under bonnet connections to stop corrosion. Also very effective to stop plug leads tracking to earth on those early morning damp starts with petrol engines.

Stewart my man. Drag yourself into the modern age.----

I love it just for the smell. The water dispersing properties are a bonus!

How I miss those days of brushing genuine creosote and Gunk!

Pardon my ignorance. Castro R sounds useful, but 'Google' directs me to Raul Castro, so i'm in the dark.

Andy had a bit of a senior moment and missed "l" off the end of Castrol. Try searching for Castrol R. Its smell has been iconic for high performance racing engines (motorbikes and cars) for years.
