I've got a miss-fire when cold with smoke.
to check which injector is the problem, can I undo each fuel pipe nut in turn,
or is this a bad idea??

Yes !!!---A very, very bad idea. The injectors run at very very high pressure.---The diesel can penetrate your skin and kill you.---

DON'T try it.---

Not only is it a bad idea from a safety point of view, it won't help to find the faulty injector either as they are fed from a common rail, so the system pressure will drop off to all of the injectors no matter which nut you undo.

I identified the duff one on mine when the technological way failed by pulling the plugs off with the engine running one at a time.
Iirc it put an event on the ECU which I cleared.
It was fully obvious which injector was duff.
