Hello Derek,

Thanks for coming back to me. I imagine that your gauge indicates pressure and as I have explained that is not an accurate or the correct way to charge your air conditioning system. It is therefore unsafe to assume on that basis that your compressor isn't working. Your refrigerant needs to be extracted and weighed as a first step in the diagnostic process. Don't give up on it Derek! A specialist's services will cost you about £80 which at the moment is less than the cost of a tank full of fuel so a small price to pay to get your air conditioning sorted out.

Hi Simon Appreciate your concerns plus sensible info. Guess its £80 against open windows???At the moment to fill my tank up is a priority, whereas aircon is purely a luxury, to be fair how often do we really require it, plus my overseas driving days are now at an end. I think open windows win!All the best stay safe

Unfortunately Forestgreen hasn't logged onto the forum for five days, since he first requested help.

Had a rethink on your advice and agree it would be great to have it sorted.
Now the 64000$ question how do I find a good air con tech as opposed to a bad one?
Are there specialist known mobile company's?
Would anybody in the Plymouth area be able to recommend one?? Thanks Simon

Well Derek, that is indeed the question that we all face when we need a specialist. It's said that in order to succeed you have to fail first. I think we've all made unfortunate decisions during our lifetime and we can benefit from this experience.

Does your background qualify you to make a sound judgement? I think so, but if you'd like to question me further please send a PM.

I think it was Freud who said "If life had no challenges it would not be worth
living"!!! He obviously had not come across a Rover 75.
But again you are correct ,as one of my jobs among many was to service and repair industrial dehumidifiers using Freon gas boiling temperature was minus 275C so dangerous now banned. I think they worked in opposite to our air con as evaporator coil was the first stop.It was rarely a compressor fail which was 110v,normally the filter had frozen or a pipe had sheared. Brazing the copper back was unbelievable, health and safety would have had a fit!!!
Anyway enough of history lessons, I'm always making mistakes when it comes to cars, you can guarantee if there are two choices I will choose the wrong one, luckily I have folks like yourself and Arctic to help put things right.
It was in a way an open handed question, plus I was hoping someone in my part of the world could suggest, as I find word of mouth always the best way to go. Stay safe Simon and thanks again

Well, I did just that. Turned out the problem was the fuse in the engine bay had blown! So a quick repair and a regas and good to go again. Happy days.

Thanks for reporting back David and it's good that your air conditioning is working again with nothing more than a replacement fuse. This does raise the question though: why did the fuse blow? You may have an intermittent short circuit, perhaps damaged wiring, from the relay to the compressor clutch. The good news is that if it happens again you'll know what to look for.
