There's always minor leakage in the 'V' of course. When the engine work was carried out, were the serrated clips on the straight plastic pipe set fully outwards and four new 'O' rings fitted?

With the expansion tank cap off and the engine started from cold, do you see a constant uninterrupted stream of coolant entering the filler neck from the narrow diameter bleed hose attached there?

Thanks for that, Simon. No constant stream of coolant from the narrow diameter bleed hose. Not sure what you mean when you mention there's always minor leakage from the 'V' - maybe you could explain further?

Thanks, Simon,

Pieter

Thanks for that. I can't see any leak where you mention - wouldn't that come up on the pressure test? Anyway, I'll keep my eye out on that and check it in case it is one of those (Rover) things that's there one day and gone the next

In which case I'd say that you still have air in the system. Drain the system fully, including the cylinder block drain plug, then refill and bleed following this MGR procedure exactly. Make sure that you raise the expansion tank as described and don't start the engine when the bleed screw is removed.

Thanks, Simon ... but here's the thing ... this issue has existed for over a year which means I have added at least five litres of coolant over that time. That's five litres in under 2000kms (the car has been hardly used in the past year, as you can tell ). The mechanic would have used a vacuum system to remove air, etc., when he refilled the coolant over a year ago.

Regarding the small pipe running from the side of the header to the top of the radiator, I can confirm there is not even a dribble when starting cold. However, I let it run longer today - once the thermostat kicked in there was a continuous trickle. Not sure if I should have waited longer before sending the last message. When I switched the engine off, the trickle became a gush.

I will follow your instructions, though, if you still think I should, given the above additional info.

Thanks again, Simon.

Hi just had a read of this thread on your leak have you had a look in the v of the engine around the thermostat area and pipes? The problem is definitely not air in the system as you have been topping it up regularly another possible leak could be from the bleed screw under the throttle body
