Default Towbar wiring

Hi everyone.
This has probably been asked before but can we wire towbar electrics directly into the rear light harness as we could on other cars or will this cause issues with the various "brains" in the car?

Please dont ask me to hum "Bring me Sunshine" LOL.

Some folk have done it and say they have no issues....

I have always fitted a canbus relay just to make sure, for the sake of £30 and an extra 15 mins, its worth doing the job properly.

You will need to run a 12v supply from the fusebox to the rear of the car.

And solder the wires to the cars loom, do not use Scotchlocks, they are the devils tool!!

I think you will need to add a TEB7AS relay that has its own live. This live I think then powers the various light functions of the trailer. You will also need to add a by pass relay for battery charging and working the fridge of a caravan. If the caravan has ATC there needs to be a permanent live but I cant recall which pin needs this on the cars trailer socket. My two cars are wired differently, one has a permanent live for the fridge the other ignition live. A habitation relay in the caravan should prevent the fridge flattening the cars battery.

you wire from cars light wiring to the TEB relay and then from the relay to the trailer socket.
With a bit of messing about you can also have a trailer bulb failure warning appear on your instrument cluster but then you will want a specific BMW relay instead of the TEB7AS plus a few other bits

Thank you. I was going to look up the wiring diagram and post for others but you have saved me the search.
