Now, now, positive thinking is what's needed now Hector. Who's to say that it will be the most economical and reliable repair that you've ever made?

I'd certainly have a go at cleaning up that copper track and soldering in a length of thick wire. You've got nothing to lose! Your 3 wire motor has given extremely good service and can continue to do so. The resistor system introduces unreliability. The two exposed brushes have loads of life left in them. Can you coax the other shy two out of hiding in their holders and photograph them?

Thanks for the encouragement! I feel like I could clean it up fairly well and I have got four new brushes ready to go in. My main thought was that I didn't fancy putting the car back together and then having to take it all apart again in a few months if the repair fails.

I'll have a go at cleaning the board up tomorrow and take some more pictures - you're right that there's nothing to lose!

Here's a picture after I've cleaned up the board with all four brushes, you can see the one which was broken in the top left.

I've been trying to reattach the broken strip, I thought I might be able to solder the break back together but it doesn't seem to want to adhere. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but would it not achieve the same result if I put in a wire between the two solder point like so:

Yes it would Hector and that's exactly what I would do.

You're doing a great job! I can't recall anyone repairing a 3 wire 2 speed motor before.

In your first photograph, the brush at the bottom of frame looks the most severely worn, closely foillowed by the brush at the top right. I'm interested to find out to which colour wires these are attached.

Well done Hector. That's what this forum is all about. DIY and saving money while learning about how things work. The wire bypass is probably better than the original item but ,maybe, more expensive when being manufactured.

Here's my progress this evening. I soldered in the wire bypass, I took the inner cable from some three-core mains plug wire which I'm sure will suffice. I was able to get a bit of solder to stick the broken part, just for good measure and then covered that with some hot glue.

Also, all four new brushes are in, two of them were fine for a bit more use but in for a penny, in for a pound!

The four brushes seem to be wired like this:

1 - Black
2 - Red
3 - Purple
4 - Connected to brush 2

It was 1 and 4 that were the most worn. Make of that what you will!

Hopefully I'll get time tomorrow evening to put the motor back together and see if it's all working.

I had good success with the fan, it is now working at both speeds and the front of the car is all back on after a faceless week. I recorded a little video to show it working at the two speeds.

As expected, though this absolutely needed doing first, it hasn't miraculously fixed the air conditioning so my next step towards fixing that will be to call out an A/C specialist to have a look.

Here's the fan board back where it belongs:

Here's the video of the fan working, you can hear it get faster when I put the paperclip in:

And here she is after I cleaned a week's worth of bird poo off:

Yes, well done Hector. You've saved yourself a shed load of money there and have a fan on which you can rely for many more years.

It's been a great pleasure to assist you.
