I'd just use the £10k as a fund to keep the Rover going for the next 5-10 years. Each part that's replaced should be good from now on. It's what I'm doing with my 2007 E61 Beemer. As long as it costs me less than £3-4k to maintain it each year it's cheaper than an average car on PPP and at least I own it.

The usual connection under the seat. More or less guaranteed.

This particular minefield is there for all of us.

Personally I'd avoid the Merc. They absolutely aren't what they used to be and yes, the bills will be eye watering. IMHO the most reliable cars are Japanese and that includes the Toyotas built in Derbyshire.

I'd have another Mazda given SWMBO's Mazda 2 which has had less than the fingers on your hands in non service items replaced in the last 8 years and is now 12 years old with 116K on the clock. But be very careful of the diesels. They have a bad reputation for eating their engines.

The other car I loved was an older 240 Volvo. Built like a tank. Just went on, and on, and on. More that a little thirsty though .

There's nothing out there that has the style, presence and character of a 75.

Better the devil you know?

And something with an incredible network of serious enthusiasts and vast technical knowledge and skill readily available.

Yeah that has always been my thinking, up to now... trouble is, I can't predict what will fail next - I don't think anybody could have foreseen the selector cable, or whatever comes next.

And if I can't predict them, I can't (without replacing half the car) guard against them...

Oh, the Merc was only ever a fantasy the girlfriend has a wee Aygo, and I love it, but I’m a big man. And I need a bit more poke. And a bigger boot.

Didn’t know that, useful to know…

Yes, I had one back in the 90s. Complete with overdrive It broke both its front springs too!

Most modern cars are money pits - I would always rather spend on the one I own, and don't talk about the prices. £200 per month always looks good in the adverts, ignoring the "deposit" and "final payment". Better the devil you know, and the greenest car you can have! Win,win.

Find me an owner who can predict future faults on any vehicle and I will offer to manage him!

So... cables ordered, hopefully fitted in a few days.

Anybody got a list of other expensive things that are likely to go wrong?

Most of the suspension/brakey things have been replaced; new exhaust; clutch/cylinders, alternator, starter motor...

What about HP pump? Turbo? Water pump? Timing chain? Injectors?

Just wait for things to go wrong and fix them when they do. Use quality parts and you won't need to replace that item again. The parts I'm replacing on my Beemer were fitted at the factory 15 years/130k miles ago so should be good for another 15 years +.

DMGRS only have backplates for one side available (unless you are buying the full rear brake kit including discs etc) although Rimmers have the other side. Bit of a pain to pay the extra P&P but it is what it is.

I've just spent around £2,000 on mine, far more than it is worth but as I have no plans to sell it, that's not really relevant. All the alternative options would have cost more in the long run.
