Mine cost me £4116 in parts and a bit of labour (did most my self) over 10 years. Thats £411.60 a year. £7.91 a week. Passed all its MOT's with no advisaries. It took me 3 months to find it. A low millage 37k conni CDTI. On average only did 4.5k a year between MOT's. So not bad i reckon.

Conclusion. Buy a minter. Use lightly and enjoy..

This may make you feel a bit better!

5 months ago my daughter purchased a 67 plate 1.4 astra with 52k miles on it. Quite a tidy car.

A few weeks ago an engine management light came on and she lost all power, she was struggling to get out of 2nd gear. She phoned the garage that she purchased it from (which is about 120 miles from where she lives), a Vauxhall dealer. They told her she had purchased the car with a 12 month warranty, and could take it to JCT 600 which is more local to her.

They checked it out for her, and found it had way too much crankshaft end float and would require a brand new engine to put it right. The service warranty company obviously wanted video evidence of the the crank movement, and also sent out the AA to look at it before they reluctantly agreed to pay the bill.

Yesterday, my daughter sent me the invoice via email so I could print it out for her (she doesn't own a printer) . I told her to keep all the documentation of this new engine in her service book for when she sells it in future.

Here goes:-

PARTS £2884.83
LABOUR £2993.84

Plus VAT

Eye watering bill, for a 1.4 Vauxhall Astra.

If she had been in an accident, and run up a repair bill of that amount, it would have been a write off for sure. In fact, I believe the total comes to more than she paid for the car, or very close.

Wow! Glad it wasn't that much I'd have told them to keep the car!

LABOUR £2993????
For an engine swap?
Surely that's over 20 hours labour, with all the correct equipment a main dealer must have.
Jeeez!

I bought Nigel our ZTT nearly 4 years ago now how quick time flies but i note im skint now lol. Have spent over 3K in that time just about got new everything underneath and easily on 3rd set of tyres but it drives well and now its stopped shredding tyres and actually goes in a straight line when desired done 50K in that time. Keep telling myself should have abandoned ship two mot's ago but we both seem to be in an abusive relationship. New clutch yday has changed things again, i dont know this car anymore

Jeeez!

I don't believe any main dealers work at £50/hour. More like double that amount!

£2993 divided by 20 is very nearly £150 per hour.
