The only thing I can suggest is coolant from the thermostat area making it's way there, difficult to say from the pics, do you have a usb camera? That would be better for poking around in places.

Have you tied a small mirror on a telescopic rod ???
I have one and it's proved useful quite often with problems like yours.

That looks like the bottom of the rear timing belt cover on the LH bank. There are lots of coolant hoses in that region. I can't wait for the next photo!

The photographs is back to front so I've reverses this one to make it look like it looks to me - I'm under the car looking up and it's on the left, so right side of the engine when looking into the engine bay normally. With the bonnet shut I can see that just above the manifolds is wet all the way along. It looks like the car is on a slight incline so it's rolling down toward that belt cover and dripping down. Which gasket am I looking at here?

I also still get a release of air and a whiff of petrol when I open the coolant tank...

Have you made sure that it's definitely coolant and not oil residue? If so, isn't the top radiator hose directly above and check the elbow connection to the radiator too.

Yes, unburnt petrol is very strange as that is injected directly into the cylinder heads.
