Default FBH Waterpump leak.

After my recent engine water pump replacement and around 2000 miles of driving my coolant level is still good , however yesterday I noticed a small amount of coolant on top of the gearbox. Feeling around the area I found the underside of the FBH water pump wet. I've pulled out the FBH to investigate and although the waterpipe from the pump to the unit seems okay , some red staining on the joint of the pump seems to suggest a gasket or seal may be the issue. As it's chucking it down as usual I've just joined the water pipes together so I can use the car.

Anyone else had this issue and are the pumps serviceable ie can the gasket / O ring be replaced or are we looking at a new pump ?

Thanks lads

Peter.

I think I'll have a go at stripping it apart as there doesn't seem to be much to it , besides I gave Brian the PCB back in the summer to give it the once over so it's not urgent .

On a few I have seen the original spring clips on the hose can allow a small leak and replacing with a jubilee clip does the trick

The pumps are not quite as simple as they seem particularly the electrics look a bit over the top for what it does , here is one I stripped down earlier, electrics completely shot !

Hi Rob , I picked the FBH off the floor last night for a look and you could be right. It was wet at the end of the pipe going into the pump. I’ll pull of the pipe and replace the clip as you describe and try to find a way to pressurise off the car.

Default FBH waterpump O ring

I had a suspect FBH (Pierburg) water pump (Diagnosed by the stopwatch method and French Mike's excellent guide).

I stripped the pump down and cleaned it all. The O ring needed to reseal the unit back together was 45mmx2mm. (eBay item# 293507097484)

Quite an easy job....just watch that the small stainless circlip doesn't fly off uncontained .......they go a long way....... 😁

Default Fixed . Thank you Trebor

Last night I removed the short hose from the water pump to the FBH body to inspect it. The clip was very tight and secure and the hose was in good condition and hadn't been touched in 19 years , so I replaced the clip with a jubilee clip as advised and fitted the unit back into the car this morning and went for a drive.

Result ....... bone dry !

I would never in a hundred years thought that tight spring clip would be the issue . One to look out for on the rest of the hoses methinks !
