Smoking 75

Hi All

I have a 2005 Rover 75 diesel (M47r) Tourer.

It was getting harder to start and eventually refused altogether .... did a leakdown test and the injectors were suspect .... took them to a reputable diesel specialist and they were goosed. Bit the bullet and got 4 genuine new Bosch replacements .... fitted them and the car starts perfectly now.

The problem I have is that it now smokes (light blue smoke so likely oil rather than fueling issues?) ... when started from cold it's mild at tickover but a proper smokescreen at steady mid revs .... disappears after half a mile or so but back on the next cold start.

It didn't smoke with the old injectors and it's hard to see valve seals, rings or turbo seals spontaneously failing while it was parked up a couple of days while I sourced the injectors.

Got me scratching my head .... have cleaned the PCV filter in parrafin as it was fairly dirty ... no change.

Any suggestions of things I may have forgotten to reconnect or disturbed (have rechecked but it is still me doing it!) .... basically any thoughts really.

Ps ... in case the pcv is still not up to par does anyone know if I can just leave the filter out of the housing for a static cold start test to eliminate it?

Also this is my first 75 (and I love the car) so I don't have much specific knowledge on the marque .... my wife's Audi had a 'learning' ecu ... does the Rover? ... and is it possible it's adjusted for the dodgy injectors and needs time to readjust to the shiny new ones (only done 5 miles test run since the change)

A trip to see one of the T4 guys will most likely provide you with the best possible diagnosis and direction to take. There are areas that can be checked using the oem equipment including injector balance / synchronisation. These must be fairly accurate for proper fuelling, although many will run quite happily in any given circumstance. The ecu does have an element of self learning after battery disconnection, but I suspect that the injector phase would remain unchanged.
There is a system called TOAF, this has been widely used with some varied outcomes by club members in its early days, and I suspect the system has undertaken many refinements over the years it has served the community, but remember that some changes made to ecu's can create new problems that need greater knowledge and better equipment to rectify the newly created issues.
So a few ideas for you to consider.

I would replace the pcv filter and check for leaks in the induction system (split hose or intercooler)

Thanks guys ..... I live in the middle of nowhere 40 miles north of Aberdeen so finding a T4 within striking distance may be a challenge 🙂 ..... will check about though.

Think a precautionary replacement of the PCV valve is on the cards.

Will run it about and see if putting some miles on it helps ..... fortunately I live up a mile of gravel track so the smokescreen phase is past by the time I'm on the public highway🙂

Thanks for that .... phoned about and there's a garage near Inverurie has diagnostics suitable for the Rover (or so they claim) ..... will contact the fellow forum member if they can't do it.

One thing I forgot to mention in my original post is that there's a hesitation/misfire associated with the smoking .... car idles fine and on the road it's not noticeable .... but if you slowly increase the revs sat in neutral you can definitely feel it.

TBH i would speak to Lovel first- many of the garages nowadays that still have a T4 are not the best at interpreting diagnostic results

You REEEAAAALLLLY want to do this (I appreciate it's difficult for you) - 10 or so years ago, when I was introduced to the joys (!) of 75 ownership, various people here encouraged me to do this, but of course my local "diesel specialist" and I knew better.


I wasted a lot of money before accepting the advice of Marinabrian & BigRuss here, and getting it sorted by people who actually knew these cars.

Have contacted Lovel and he's quite close by Aberdeenshire standards (it's a big county!!) .... going to see him on Saturday and hook up the T4 .... many thanks for your replies (and if you have any sudden 'lightbulb moments' still let me know &#128578

Will chug about in my old Defender til the weekend!

Had this with two different Freelanders both of which had the TD4 engine and it was dirty injectors. A dose of Forte injector cleaner sorted it on both occasions.

I know you have fitted new injectors, but you may have a problem with one of them.

The M47R engine itself is pretty much bulletproof - mine has now done over 423k miles, and the valve seals, rings and turbo seals are untouched and haven't worn out yet, so if your car has been regularly serviced they should be fine.
