Default Temp gauge

Hi Any advice please would be appreciated.. my temp gauge is dropping to 0 when driving and I can hear the fan coming on😬..is there anything I can check before booking it in?.also I’m looking for a reputable garage/mechanic in Sedgefield/Durham area preferably who likes working on “the older” car😊..Thanks in advance..

Could be a dodgy temperature sensor or wiring. If the ECU loses the signal it defaults to "panic mode" and turns the fan on.

This is the explanation given in RAVE Sheran. Initially try cleaning and reseating the sensor connector.

once it is removed there should be an escape of fluid from the block , pretty much immediately. if not it should release any air before filling the void and rising up . at least this is what i found. This was on a cold engine with the reservoir cap removed.

The temperature gauge will drop to the 'Off' position when the coolant temperature sensor signal is lost. It's typically due to muck and vibration in the wiring connector plug. As a safety measure, the fan responds by turning on to cool what could be an overheating engine. A good reconnection will fix the problem. No other steps are required. The sensor and its connector are located at the coolant outlet elbow from the head (RHS as you look at it from the front).
