Hi all.

I did the dial tests on it today (where you hold the mileage reset and set a number), tested the fan and heating, all fine. Went for 5/10 min drive watching the temp on speedometer rise from 46 to highest 111 - got to 90 within about 3 mins (I wasn’t sure if it was degrees or Fahrenheit as it didn’t say).

Came back, bled it and lots and lots of air came out. The problem was the air kept on coming! I’m guessing I have a air pipe leak but I will take a screenshot of this chat and all the suggestions to send to the garage.

Just so annoying after just getting it back.

It’s better to bleed it while stationary rather than going for a drive.

At 105 degrees your fan should have cut in to bring the temp down into the low 90's - 111 is too high - and did you get to 90 IN 3 minutes in stationary idle or driving - if the latter thats OK but certainly not if just idling.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for coming back to us. I'm not sure if you're aware of the correct MG Rover procedure for bleeding your cooling system but here it is, just in case:

Bleeding 1.8 cooling system

You'll see that the air is bled after refilling and without the engine running. Also note the other precautions. I'd recommend that you go through this procedure step by step and don't miss anything out! Many members find that this is all that's wrong with their car; that the cooling system hasn't been properly bled.

Also be careful taking an overheating 1.8 to a garage. I wouldn't mind betting that they'll tell you that your head gasket has gone.

Simon

Whilst driving 3 mins, was around the 40 mark whilst stationary. 111 at highest, slowly decreased to 108, the fan most likely did kick in, just couldn’t cool down enough.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for this, my dad has several Rovers and one Rover 25 (which I assume is similar given its MG Rover) so he knew what to do, and he bled it after the drive. The car has just gone through a MOT and Service at a reliable garage with no head gasket worries (my dad would be able to spot it as his 25 has blew a few...&#128556 but we think it’s got an air lock or a leaky air pipe

So that sounds like your fan is not working as it should cut in at 105 to bring the temp down.- if its a later car it will have the 2 speed fan - the resistor on these fail - go to front of car and look through your grill to the right - if on the fan at 11 o clock there is a silver resistor you have a 2 speed fan . To check the fan is working do the DeMist test .

Adam, you need to be more precise with your diagnostics. "Most likely" won't do! Please check your fan using the demist test then drive the car and make sure that it cuts in at 104 degrees.

Also I don't understand how your Dad could have bled the cooling system after a drive. It can be done only when the engine is stone cold, please see the procedure which I posted earlier.

Simon

Default Overheating 1.8 Petrol

Fans working, I’ve got some new headlights to put on so I’ll check what colour the strips are then and if they’re silver I’ll replace to gold. Water is stone cold but engine as I said is around the 110 mark. However after about 2 hours of doing several different things I think it must have a bad thermostat. This is because it’s just not lowering the temp when it gets to 105. Taking it for another 5 minute run tomorrow, but it’s gonna have to go back to the garage most likely to be fixed.
