Default Insurance renewal

Just had my 4 weeks notice of the automatic renewal/quote. Not changed car, address, usage, not had any [recent] accidents ie circumstances unchanged in past 5/6 or so years.
Not amended the policy in any way (which is fairly 'basic' comprehensive cover) and have 20 years NCB. it's previously been competitive despite increases which is why I've remained with the provider.....now gone up a whacking 75%! Overheads, (my bet is this service industry is one of those that is a sure thing 'work from home' candidate). Costs, well in our case even the slightest claim is a 95% cert. write-off so absolute tops £400 and Rover must be one of the shrinking vehicles populating our roads. Risk, perhaps due to my age, means the second party claim would be substantial (unless I hit another Rover!) and I do live in an area where high value car theft (in particular Land Rover) is well publicised but who would steal a 20 years old 75 (except for the cat!)
Where do they get these charges from?

Its probable that they are trying to recover money "splashed out" (no pun intended) on the additional costs of claims by folk who like to navigate their way through deep water due to the several storms with names that have hit Britain. Here in Suffolk things have been made worse as there has been great areas of land covered with new houses without any improvements in drainage. Rapid run-off of water from drives and estate roads that is dumped in the local sewerage system or the surface water drainage has caused flooding of local streams etc.

Well my renewal quote with Aviva was cheaper than last year - £197 compared to £202.

Happy days!

Yep, my vehicle insurances have shot up, too. The insurance companies claim it's because of inflation driving up costs: labour and parts.

Personally I'm convinced it is just cynical profiteering. They know they've got us by the balls because it's mandatory.

You and me both.

I'm expecting my renewal quote any day now

Just reading an article in the Times of Malta. According to the Finance Minister, vehicle insurance premiums rose last year to €139,151,769 from €122,681,572 in 2022 (13.4%) and €114,861,402 in 2021 (6.8%). Apparently, the increase is being blamed on a projected increase in road accidents and also other costs which could impact the cost of claims, such as inflation.

Gross claims in 2023 were €64,852,888 which were down from €69,368,300 in 2022. Claims in 2021 were €63,291,020.

It doesn't, however, mention the cost of premiums for this year.

Although my insurance was quite reasonable at 110 euros in Gozo,Malta. It was the road tax that cost 876 euros that was hard to swallow, being a diesel auto' it was worked out on the emissions and age.

I received a renewal notice and quote and searched the web for better deals. Found one some Β£40 cheaper and so went for it. The "old" insurer didnt respond to my request that they re-visit their quote but when renewal date happened (on Sunday) they went ahead and renewed it despite my having e mailed them.
Phoned up today and they said they didnt accept cancellation by e mail! (they accept taking out cover on the web so why not????) Anyway. They asked for proof that I had taken out cover with someone else, wanted to talk through my renewal terms with them to see if they could do it cheaper and said I could stil candle my new polcy with others and stay with them.
I didnt take them up o it cos if they cant do a competitive renewal without some 3/4 hr on the phone why waste my time. It was Hastings by the way who were the "old" broker/insurers. Will they try and sue if they see this??? watch this space.
