The permanent magnets are fragile and easily broken while bending the tabs (hammer & chisel job!) to get the end plate off the motor, I could pull the motor to bits and find brush plate is damaged or the commutator is shot. Do you not have a local motor rewind repair company near you Steve? Here in Leicester we have mick davis rewinds, they under take most dc and ac motor repairs. There must be something similar up their near you.

I found a much more useable "how to" over on the community site, now a lot more confident. On here I ended up with a kind of patchwork of documents but now have a clear, concise how to replace the brushes. Just need a decent day to do it, Sunday is out, Edinburgh Marathon, road is closed, have to park the car in the museum next door.
