Default Problems removing applique assembly number plate lights

2005 facelift just failed mot on one number plate light not working. Usual pcb problem. Two centre nuts that hold the chrome trim in place are seized on their respective bolts which just turn when nuts are rotated. Used plenty of penetrating fluid and tried using molegrips to hold end of bolt whilst turning nut. One has shifted a bit. But they seem to be made of softer metal. Can't find out how they attach to the chrome trim or why they're turning. Anyone had same problem and more importantly, how they overcame it! Thanks

You've found the screwit issue I had. The outer 'nuts' aren't what you think they are and they don't screw onto a metal thread. It's a plastic pin.

Here's what you need: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...11&postcount=4

Thanks T-cut but it's the two inner bolts rather than the two outer ones. I was following that excellent guide you refer to. They are definitely made of some kind of soft metal.

As I recall, the inner pair of holding 'screws' a have a flattened 'head' held steady in the plastic moulding. If the nuts are corroded on, the heads will easily rip from the housings. I vaguely remember adding resin to mine to ensure they stayed put.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to 'break' the chrome fitting away from the boot as the two bolts seem to rotate freely and hope nothing else gets too damaged. Unless I get any other ideas.

If it can't be repaired, they're often available on ebay.

eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-F...8AAOSwsvhZlwQd

Expect any you buy second hand to have the outer plastic pins snapped, but repairable.

Yes there's a few on eBay in various condition. None of the photos are clear enough to give me an idea of exactly how the bolts are retained within the chrome trim and why they rotate. Shame because my one is in perfect condition! I'll give it another try... Thanks.

I'm pretty sure (though I wasn't paying much attention) that the bolts are just standard size items held in the trim with resin or similar.

If it was me I'd try and get a dremel or similar in to cut the nuts off before going down the road of a whole new trim. Doing that also avoids damaging the holes in the boot lid as well.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that. Bit limited on space but might be able to work it. Or a really small nut splitter if I can find one
