Ronnie. it sounds to me like a virus,Avira isnt upto the job i am afraid, without starting the old free versus commercial AV debate, but there is no way that free stuff can replace commercial software, Tesco's home brand is good, made by panda.

My feeling would be a rootkit or rogue/fake antivirus infection.

Would try Kaspersky tdsskiller and malwarebytes anti-malware, both are free for non-commercial use.

If free antivirus products did the same job as paid products then Avast, AVG, etc would not have a business.

I agree a good antivirus is essential but are good at prevention rather than cure, to clean the system at the moment (assuming it is a virus) try a 'live' linux CD, you can boot straight from the CD into a user friendly GUI and scan your hard drive for problems - modern viruses tend to attach themselves to important OS files that can't be removed while Windows is up and running. Try a CD from here - there free:

What a day! Thanks to everyone for the advice.Late last night,i managed to download Kaspersky 2011, so this morning, installed & ran the cleaner. 11 hours later, & all is now well.Turned out there were Trojan droppers attached to all windows files,& these were letting loads of viruses imto the system.Anyway,Kaspersky cleaned everything,so back to normal.Once again, thanks for the advice & help.Ronnie

Had some top paid for a.v. programs in the past and got rid of them all. Replaced with FREE "microsoft essentials" and had no problems for over 6 months. What's more it does not eat up memory. You don't know it's running.
