There is something somewhere (helpful I know ) about the linkages that connect to the gearbox becoming loose/worn and making shifting gears difficult. I'll see if I can dig up where I heard this from...

Here is one link: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=2854

This one describes similar 'noises' but suggests a different solution: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=3894

Keith says the gear linkages are easy to get at as per this quote

Default Synchro/Double de-clutching

Still made crunch on the change.
Any ideas on the fix for this problem?
Unlike modern cars it was not all that long ago that there was no snchromesh on the lower gears (and earlier than that no synchro on ANY gears)
The idea of blipping the throttle when going through neutral to a lower, or higher, gear is that this speeds up the shafts/gears so that they are rotating at the same speed and so the one gear slides into and meshes with the other.
Practice got it perfect in the end. If you listen to an old lorry you will often hear them using this technique to change.
The (usually brass) synchro rings are, I think, like a cone clutch type of arrangement where as you push the gears the cone engages, both shafts then move at the same speed and facilitates one gear meshing perfectly with the other, voilla, no grating.
Well that's my explanation and I'm sticking to it ! ! !

That's a great explanation - I can get my head round it now.

It seems maybe it is a syncro problem. As the sound on selecting 2nd gear is the sound you get when you are trying to select a gear but have not properly dipped the clutch. It is not hard to select the gear just noisy.
It results in people stopping in their tracks & turning heads & pointing etc...

Question is is it expensive to fix? Should I just put up with it? If I do just put up with it will it cause damage eventually?
