Selling a car privately - Help!

In the past we have always traded our cars in, I cant remember ever selling a car privately and I have no idea how to go about the finer points of it.

My Dad is in his 80s now and the time has come for him to sell his MGZT190, he bought it as a Pre-Reg on a 53 plate, its a pre face lift in Red with 47k miles on the clock. The car has had a pampered life with a full service history with the same garage. Paint & panels are all original and the car genuinely looks like new inside/outside/under bonnet, not so much as a parking ding. Spent its life locked in a brick built double garage. It is to be serviced and MOTd next week, this has been booked in for a while, but Dad has realized that following lockdown he no longer feels quite so confident in such a large car.

I spoke to our local MG dealer, they would like it but they don't want to pay what it must surely be worth. So we are going to attempt to sell it privately.

I can do the pictures and write the words and we can stick it on ebay, facebook and forums like this one, that's the easy bit. What do you do when someone wants a test drive with regards insurance? Do you only allow test drives to people who you have already negotiated a price with - subject to the test drive or does that limit your chance of a sale? Any advice would be appreciated including a guide price we should be looking for.

Once advertised if someone comes to look at the car then the chances are they are interested. Let them have a good look around and just chat, that's the best way. Get all your paperwork together and fix your price in your mind that you will not negotiate below.

As for a test drive you take the wheel and take the buyer for a local run and then for the return journey let them take over to drive it back home. Just remain with the car at all times.

unless they can show insurance and you have money in your hand, don't let them drive.
I would say you do the driving.

make sure as soon as they take the car from you having paid, you cancel the insurance in case they have an accident

Also, once sold cash in hand just register the sale on the DVLA website, takes 5 minutes and if they get speedcam flashed on their way home your covered

Hi David,

A pampered car like your Dad's could do well at a classic car auction. There was a ZT-T 190 at Bonham's only last month. It takes all the hassle out of selling: no haggling or worry about test drives!

All of the above is probably very good advice, but I’ve always let the potential buyer drive the car, usually on their own!
It’s what I’d want to do if I went to buy a car.
Trustworthy, naive or just a rural thing....?
I usually make an educated guess if the car they’ve come in is worth more than what I’m selling.
Of course, it could be stolen, etc etc, but life’s too short to get bogged down in all the “what ifs”.
