Interesting idea Simon, but every auction I have ever seen on TV seems to need buyers fees, sellers fees & administration fees. Not sure an MG ZT, even a nice one, can command a price to make all the fees worthwhile. I will bear in mind though if it all gets too much. Thanks for your input.

75D what about insurance? If the potential buyer steals it I have no cover as I gave him the key! If he crashes it I have no cover. If he gets stopped by the police he has no cover but I get the impound fees. Or would you, as a potential buyer, expect to arrange your own cover?

This made £2700 at todays classic auction so there is money out there for clean cars.

Thanks for your reply David. Your Dad would pay only commission on the hammer price (which is usually around 6% plus vat) and a nominal entry fee. However you stand to achieve a higher price at an auction because (1) only genuinely interested buyers take part and (2) the bidding goes up whereas at a private sale the negotiation is in a downward direction!

And of course you can set a reserve price so if you don't get what you are looking for you have only lost the entry fee.

Absolutely true. ----------------For the last 40 years or so I have only ever bought my and the families cars at auction.

HOWEVER the Buyers fees are now getting to be beyond a joke.---

A reserve is a great idea.

I have never knowingly met anyone who has bought a car from an auction. I am not convinced this is the route to getting my Dad a fair price for his car.
