Well, That was a no-fun afternoon!
I just changed my first set of ZT front drop links and was disappointed to find they were part of another sub-assembly designed for the production line, not for maintenance. It wouldn't have been difficult to engineer the upper mount so that they were easier to service.
The replacements I installed were MGRover packaged and marked "Made in the UK" The socket for the lower joint has a nylon insert unlike the all metal units that were on the car. This doesn't mean that they are inferior but it will be interesting to see how they hold up. One thing that proved to be an issue was that they were supplied with nylocks instead of the original washer base locknuts. The nylocks took a 17mm wrench rather than the original's 15mm and that larger size made it just that bit more difficult to tighten them. I used the original type nuts on the second side and that gave just a little bit more room to get a wrench on them. One strange thing I found was that the shank on the stud took a 17mm wrench on one link but 5/8" on the other. It may have just had a burr but I don't think so. Odd!
The most helpful tip I found online was to cut 7mm off the end of the upper stud to make it easier to get a wrench on. I even went out and bought a set of crow-foot wrenches but the 7mm tip gave similar access.
