I'm with rac and response times are not as good as they were. on the plus side they are very skilled, polite and helpful. assuming you can get the cover you want from them then Tesco club card points can take the edge off the cost.

I emailed the RAC some while ago via their webform, to ask if they could meet my full requirement for cover. They haven't bothered to reply.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I guess you've got quite a niche requirement. I under if it would be worth looking at how much it would be to self insure any transportation of your caravan?

Just cover your car and set aside a sum of money should you need it.

I know what you mean and yes I could do that, but so much easier to just be able to ring a breakdown company and have them deal fully with the whole package as one.

I don't think it is such a niche requirement. The 'take you and your car home' package, is rather useless if they abandon your prize caravan far from home. I would suggest it is an essential for anyone who takes touring caravan or camper holidays.

Hi John,
When my wife went to France last year she ended up using the "add-on" on a nationwide premium account (can't remember what it was called).

Her camper van broke down just outside Le-Mans, and as it was being used as accommodation as well as transport they put her up in a hotel for a few days, supplied a hire car, booked her alternative ferry tickets (so she could leave the hire car in France) and relayed the van back to the UK, even providing her with a hire car in the UK until her van arrived back.

The fault was "only" a split radiator, but access to parts, in France, was the issue (the van was never sold officially in France) - hence the recovery. I would hope on our cars they would be able to mend in country. Overall I was very impressed with the service she received.

Regards
Chris

I think it's essential for anyone staying away from home and using their vehicle, for the recovery to include retrieving belongings (including caravans, trailers, tents, luggage - even Pets!) from wherever they were left, before relaying home.

Without that, it would mean just abandoning a lot of personal belongings in a caravan.

Have you looked at Mayday recovery from the caravan club, I know you have to be a member but it may suit your requirements.

Dave.

AA and RAC do not offer a "take you home" package. What they offer is a recovery package that takes the vehicle, driver and passengers to a single destination of the member's choice if they are unable to fix the vehicle. It is very clear in their offers and contracts that this is the case.

In my view the requirement to return to a caravan or another base to collect the caravan or other belongings is a niche and unlikely to be met by a standard recovery package from any of the major companies. Hence my earlier suggestion that your need is more likely to be fulfilled by a specialist package for caravan owners.

The majority of people on holiday or work trips, who are using a place away from home as their base, would want the car taken to a garage and fixed as opposed to it being taken home given that most modern cars are not fixed at home by the majority of car owners.

I use https://www.startrescue.co.uk/

Very good they are.

If you sign up to Top Cashback you get money off, which is how I do it.

This year I paid £60.

They do short term european cover.
