Music was my suggestion too many moons ago. I felt if it could cut across international barriers then maybe universal ones also.
But it was not to be. The consensus in that class was in favour of ... mathematics. Without an understanding of which and its spin-off subjects how else would they be able to conceive of ideas and the means and then to build machines which would enable them to traverse the universe to reach us. So, mathematics. The universal language of understanding and maybe the one of communication too. |

There are excellent examples. Greeks, Romans, Syrians, Persians, Incas, all had advanced the subject to impressive (astronomic?) heights. Without Pythagoras we would all be dashing around in ever decreasing squares. Even Michelangelo invented the helicopter. Poor old Newton had to get a bump on the head to understand the gravity of it all. Some say it is divisive, but that is taking it back to square one.

Mathematics linked to the Periodic Table is thought to be the universal equivalent of a Rosetta Stone.

Interesting thought by someone on a science channel recently. " Of course there is life on other planets, some have not progressed as far as us,others have progressed further, but before they got in touch with other worlds they have wiped themselves out by over population or blown up their worlds by wars."
It seems to me we are heading in that direction.

Thanks for not quoting the whole post, it's even more provocative out of context. As you discovered.

I've always wondered about Ants.
They will take over the world, they are the aliens and will inherit the earth one day. |
