Hi Chris,

I have this problem too, but intermittently. My disc is ejected then consumed again accompanied by a rapid clicking sound. Sometimes this results in normal operation and sometimes the 'greyed' legend you've described appears.

A friend, who is blessed with an understanding of how computers work, tells me that the computer checks for the presence of a disc by attempting to read it. He thinks that the clicking sound is the reading head having a spasm. If the computer cannot read the disc, for whatever reason, it removes the sat. nav. option from the LCD screen.

I've been working through the possible cause of my malfunction for some time. I've cleaned the discs and I've loaded different ones, but it makes no difference. I've liberally lubricated the mechanics of the disc deck with no improvement. I've recently noticed that whenever I have removed the unit for attention and plug it back in again, but without locking it back into the cage, it works perfectly. I'm therefore wondering whether it could be an intermittent electrical connection resulting from the loom being compressed behind the unit when it is re-inserted.

But I digress. In your case Chris, does the red LED on the disc drive extinguish about a minute after you've removed the key from the ignition?

Simon

I'll go and check just now. Haven't had the chance to do anything with the car as it's been snowing up here. Give you an answer soon.

Yes the light goes out just after a minute. Flashes then goes out.

One thing you don't state is whether the optical pick-up has been cleaned. My daughter had a similar issue, opened the unit up, cleaned the optical lens and the sat nav has been fine ever since.

Doesn't explain the re-connection issue but worth trying if you haven't already.
