Having spent half the value of the car (almost!) chasing this problem, I wonder at what point does one throw in the towel? Answers on a postcard please!

lol! Well, I may ‘park’ this problem until I’m wealthy and retired and maybe fix it then.....
Perhaps (yet) another UBP will have to be the last chance saloon throw of the dice. £200 on an ecu and more £’s on other bits and bobs maybe should be topped off with a Pierburg UBP then watch and wait. Only trouble is this is our only car and it is used daily so it can’t be a project; a luxury I can only dream of in keeping an eventual classic car. |

I still have my original Pierberg pump somewhere, It failed once but worked for a week with no further problems after a tap on the side, Your welcome to it as a temporary replacement if you'd like. Probably still better than an aftermarket one

Well, there’s a gift horse! I do like ‘try before you buy’; at least a temporary swap would (likely) rule out the UBP as the source of my chagrins. Happy to go ahead and pay postage to me so I guess a pm with addresses etc is the next step. Publicly, thank you very much for the offer; if I could try it for a month or two and see how it goes. The prob should surface again in that time.

No they aren't - the HP pump is engine driven and as mentioned the O ring on the fuel pressure regulator that sits on the end of the pump can fail causing exactly the sort of symptoms you are having. Cheap and easy fix so worth checking it out. |

Well I declare; we have 3 pumps on these cars. Live and learn! As it turns out, Lee T came over from Crosby and in the freezing wind howling up the driveway, I watched as he replaced the newish (leaking!) Magneti Marelli UPB with his Pierburg. He then wanted to satisfy his curious thought that he had the night before re: high mileage I mentioned (nearly 250k) and saw to testing the injectors. Low and behold, 1 and 3 were ok-ish, 2 was dry and fine but 4 spurted fuel. Seemingly it miserably failed the leak back test! Long story short, replaced the injector and we both (after he explained, he’s good at that, about fuel leak back) seem to think it was that all along. Sporadically the check engine light flashed up over the last year or so and this can indicate a failing injector. I’ll report back here of course but for now it’s a waiting game and the usual fingers crossed that a stall doesn’t occur.
