I dislike the behaviour of the automatic diesel, and it's across the board, not just one car, so much so I'm considering buying a new DMF and pulling the manual gearbox from my ZT and converting it into a manual. Brian |

I've got one of each, prefer the manual around town, but the auto is great when driving distances. More control with the manual if you want to "boot" it, however sport mode on the auto does have a similar effect. Love them both, but if I had to choose it would be auto.

I think it would be prudent for the OP to take an automatic for a test drive
The general consensus among automatic owners is they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, whether or not I was influenced by this when I bought my diesel auto is a matter of opinion. What is clear to me however is I really don't like the way the automatic behaves in these cars, it's not just one particular car, but every one I've driven since buying one myself exhibits the same (in my opinion) undesirable characteristics. This is why I would encourage you to test drive one before committing yourself to purchase Brian |

Absolutely +1 for marinabrian's post.
With all the nightmare stories about clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder problems I was "influenced" to go auto. For me and my driving style a big mistake. Each to their own. Neither is right or wrong, but it's YOU driving so YOU need to be happy with whatever 'box you choose. Andy. |

Adored the autos for last 6 years. Find it hard going back to daily manual now.

Having owned two many cars to remember and a few of them American V8 autos grew to like easy of driving with no worry over which gear to be in as cars had lots oomph, Then I got a Mercedes 190e auto loved it except a bit to under powered so was ok to nip to shops in but not ideal to cross country in. So now to rover cdti auto which i purchased by chance, This I find all round with its five speed box, smooth changes, sports mode , combined with engine that has adequate power a really nice relaxing drive .

My 2.5 is an auto, all my others have been manuals. The box in my 2.5 is really smooth, everything does what its supposed to do and does it well, but I still prefer manuals.

I have owned a manual and an auto ZT CDTi 135 and now have a 75 1.8T auto. I didn't set out to buy either autos as autos - it was a case of right car, right time, and time has proven both decisions to be correct. My thoughts -
Manual: + better fuel economy + cheaper tax + more direct control + sharper, more linear throttle response + quicker in most circumstances Auto: + more relaxing + quicker off the line + far easier in traffic + more reliable + easier to find a comfortable driving position For me, it has to be an auto.
