Default Belts and Blue Smoke

The car is now in storage for 6 months whilst I am in Africa. I am posting this in follow up to a discussion a few months ago, should I do the belts or not and sort out the blue smoke issue, which clears after 10 - 15 seconds on start up.

I decided go ahead with the belts and smoke repairs now etc, going for new and genuine parts. Work is to be carried out by Shiner an esteemed forum member and highly qualified mechanic. Thank you very much Andy for your help. The belts were last changed 9 years ago and have done 30,000 miles ....cheers

I too have the blue smoke issue so would be interested in a progress report on your work . What cure are you going for ; is it head(s) off and new valve stem oil seals ?

Thank you Chris. I have had the blue smoke from cold start up for 3 years. I spoke with Andy last night and it’s going to be head off, change the gauze filter etc, He said he will send a video of all the steps involved and I expect he will inspect the seals if they are to be done.

Ok
I have done the gauze filters and the pipework , but with no improvement so I am thinking the valve stem seals will have to be next !

Typical result from valve stem seals starting to fail.

Oil runs down the valve stems over night and collects in the combustion chambers to get burnt away on start up.----

Hence the contribution to world pollution.-----

Interested in this thread as my 1.8 copperleaf sometimes gives out oily smoke from cold start up, otherwise fine. Does seem to use oil over a period of 6 months around 500 ml. in 4,000 miles. Wondered about valve stem oil seals, however had a brand new head only 22,000 miles ago. Anything else that could cause this?

Did the head come complete with new valves, seals etc or could some old components have been refitted ?

Don't know whether they used the old parts on a new head or not, the bill at the time with head gasket stretch bolts belts water pump plugs service etc came to £1200. This was just over 6 years ago.

You say Brand New Head. Do you mean a head that had never been used on a car before or was it reconditioned ??

A recon head might have come from a car that had gasket and over heating problems.--The excess heat could easily have damaged the rubber valve seals which might have been left in during the refurb process.-
